IIT Madras launches ‘open-for-all’ online BSc degree in programming, data science with placement support – Latest News

NEW DELHI: In order to make quality computer education accessible to all citizens in India, IIT Madras has launched an online degree in Programming and Data Science. This course will be available only online. While the eligibility criterias are relaxed, to graduate with this BSc degree from IIT Madras will require students to work hard and clear examinations.

“We want to offer a quality online course to anyone who is interested in studying Programming and Data Science. Our course has been made online so that anyone can study from anywhere in India. But when it comes to quizzes and examinations, students will need to work hard and appear in-person to clear these tests,” said professor Prathap Haridoss, IIT Madras.

Talking about placements, professor Haridoss said, “There is a huge demand for people with data science and programming skills in the market. Anyone who takes this course seriously can apply for jobs with this degree. Also, we will be providing placement support as well to top-performing students. We will provide soft-skill training as well to these students and will also invite them to take part in IIT Madras internal projects.”

Having said that, there is also the flexibility to exit at any level with a certificate or diploma. As far as costs are concerned, the fee completely depends on the number of courses students take at a time. There is no upfront commitment financially as such. To successfully complete the course with a BSc degree, it may cost around Rs 3.55 lakh for general category students while the foundation course costs around Rs 32,000. However, there are fee waivers for select categories of students. IIT Madras has a dedicated website —
onlinedegree.iitm.ac.in — which provides all the details about the course.

Examinations

IIT Madras will provide recorded video content–lectures, problems– every week. The duration of each video would be 15 to 30 minutes amounting to a total of about 2-3 hours of video content every week in each course.

“Weekly assignment(s), which will be released along with the videos, will have to be completed and submitted online in the specified period of time. There will be 3 quizzes for each course, one each at the end of weeks 4, 7 and 10. Each course further culminates in an End Term Exam. All the quizzes and the end term exams have to be completed by the learner, in person, at designated exam centres, held under invigilation. All in-person, invigilated quizzes and exams will be scheduled for weekends, subject to availability of dates with exam partners,” as per the information on the website.

There are three types of assessments for each course – online weekly assignments, monthly in-person invigilated quizzes and an in-person invigilated end term exam.

Choice of degree, diploma or certificate

Note that those who enroll for this online course will not be able to access IIT Madras campus facilities. The full program takes between 3 and 6 years to complete. “On an average, we anticipate that a learner studying part time will finish the degree in 4 to 5 years. While this is the estimated time for the full degree, a diploma can potentially be obtained faster (around 8 months – 2 years),” it said.

There are three levels in the program and to get a BSc Degree in Programming and Data Science from IIT Madras, a student has to successfully complete all three levels. There is also the flexibility to exit at any level. Depending on the courses completed, the student can receive Foundational Certificate from Centre for Continuing Education, IIT Madras or Diploma(s) from IIT Madras.

“There is a separate Industry Interaction Cell being set up as part of the online degree program to facilitate interactions of the industry with the learners in the program to encourage collaborations for internship and recruitment. We will try to make internship / recruitment opportunities available to learners in Diploma or Degree Level only,” it said.
