P Jayaraj and J Beniks
MADURAI: P Jayaraj and his son, J Beniks, were assaulted by some personnel at the Sathankulam police station with lathis the whole night after their arrest on June 19, a woman head constable said in her statement to the Kovilpatti judicial magistrate (JM).
In his report to the Madras high court, the JM said the woman constable was in a very fearful state of mind since her higher officials were present at the police station when he took her statement on June 28. He stated though she had given a statement regarding the incident, she was hesitant to sign the statement. Only after she was assured about her safety, she signed the statement.
The woman constable stated that the father-son duo were beaten up with lathis the whole night due to which there were bloodstains on the table and the lathis. Since she apprehended that they might wipe the blood stains from the table and the lathis, she asked him to take possession of the lathis.
The JM stated that initially the police personnel had refused to hand over the lathis to him. However, later they handed over the lathis to him.
The JM also stated that the CCTV system was programmed in such a way that the footage got erased every day. He stated that the CCTV footage since June 19 was not available in the system.
Since the police officials were taking video of the proceedings and a panic situation was prevalent at the police station, the JM and his team — who came to the police station by 12.45pm — left the police station by 5pm.
Based on this report submitted by the JM, Madras high court initiated suo motu contempt proceedings against three police personnel.
