NEW DELHI: As the Indian government announced a ban on 59 Chinese apps, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, too, decided to quit the Chinese microblogging website Weibo, which he had joined a few years ago.
For VIP accounts, the microblogging website has a more complex procedure to quit which is why an official process to deactivate the account was initiated. However, for reasons best known to Weibo, there was a great delay in granting this basic permission.
Before deletion, the PM had 115 posts on Weibo. As the concerned authorities dilly dallied on deactivation request, it was decided to manually delete all the posts.

On Weibo, it is difficult to remove posts with the photo of Chinese President. Hence, two posts were PM had photos with President Xi Jinping couldn’t be deleted, easily. Later, however, these two posts were also deleted.

Interestingly, the follower count on the account continues to stand at 244,000- which was roughly the same when the deletion of posts began.
